About
Dahab
Dahab,
which means gold in Arabic, started as a small Bedouin fishing village in the
south-east of the peninsula. Once known as a hippie hangout, Dahab nowadays is
more than tie-dyes and rastafaris. Growing interest in activities such as
scuba-diving and windsurfing are attracting tourists from all over the world.
Yet, Dahab is still less "uptight" than its neighbor Sharm El Sheikh. It manages
to maintains a chill-out atmosphere, while offering all the services and
facilities one seeks.
Accommodation and dining here ranges from budget to
5-star.
What to do in Dahab:
-
Taking a day or overnight camping/trekking trip to the amazing desert
landscape of South Sinai. Places to visit include the White Canyon, Closed Canyon
and Colored
Canyon.
-
A
trip to Mount
Sinai (sunrise
and sunset trips are popular) and St. Katherine's Monastery.
If you feel adventurous, you can make a trekking trip around the other
mountains within the St. Katherine Protected
Area. Just
make sure you arrange your trip through Sheikh Musa, the Bedouin responsible
for treks in the area.
-
Fresh seafood,
which includes red snapper, calamari, shark and lobster. We recommend the "Sea
Bride" (literal translation of mermaid) restaurant. They have a daily variety
of fish and seafood, which is accompanied by seafood soup, rice, salad and
dips.
